On job interviews I’d sometimes ask the employer, “In 1 year, how will you know that your hire was successful?”
Whether I was interviewing with a marketing agency, photography studio, or music studio, I wanted to understand what they’d be looking out for within the first year of employment.
Now that I’m unlocking alternative streams of income — developing my own writing studio — I’m the only person I can ask.
(Hah! Yes, “studio” seems to be a common theme.)
“One year from now, how will I know I was successful?”
My path is focused, yet, flexible. All I can say right now is this:
If by December of next year I’ve experimented, formed connections, and trusted myself in ways that the old me would’ve resisted, then I was 100% successful.
Whether you work for yourself or answer to a boss (or a mix of both), maybe you can spend some time with this question:
How do I measure success within myself?
