EDITOR’S NOTE: You’re about to read “About Kat: The AI Remix.” You can read the original version right here. As I reboot my brand writing, I’ve decided to incorporate ChatGPT more than ever before. Can you guess which prompts I gave ChatGPT to get this condensed, more humorous version of my about page?

I’m Kat, your Encinitas-and-Jersey based writer on a mission to amplify the voices of health and wellness practitioners, founders, and leaders – kind of like a megaphone but much less annoying!

(Yes, I serve clients outside of this industry, and I love them, too.)

Supporting holistic health businesses is a must because my journey into mind-body-spirit wellness has been deeply personal.

A few years back, I faced a months-long respiratory infection. Instead of reaching for a prescription pad, I turned inward. Cue the fasting, juicing, and a raw vegan diet.

I owe a huge shoutout to holistic health practitioners who shared their wisdom online. Thank goodness for their free knowledge! Without it, I might still be wandering the aisles of the local pharmacy…

And I was once a pharmacy technician, but that’s anotha story.

My holistic journey didn’t end there. After years of hormonal imbalances and painful periods, I found relief by ditching sugar (for the most part) and working with an energy therapist. This was a game-changer!

He helped me confront emotions I had buried deeper than the last pair of socks I lost in the dryer. Fun fact: I found him through a YouTube video that matched my Google search. Who knew the internet could lead to enlightenment?

Through this journey, I’ve learned that communication is a vital part of wellness.

As I faced my emotions, I practiced transparent self-expression. And let’s be honest – expressing ourselves can be scary. Especially on the internet. That place can get pretty weird.

But it’s also where the magic happens.

So, if you’re an executive, entrepreneur, or practitioner in the health and wellness world, let’s tackle the friction of expressing ourselves together.

Stay tuned for my Midweek Mixtape, where I share bite-sized messages about entrepreneurship and digital writing. I promise I’ll keep every email short and helpful.

– Kat

If a small business owner were to ask me, “How do I grow my audience?” I’d point them toward personal wellness, as well as technical skills.

For now, let’s look at the technical side, specifically, search engine optimization (SEO). Although there are other pieces to the puzzle, this post is all about on-page SEO.

On-page SEO encompasses the content that shows up on your website, as opposed to your behind-the-scenes SEO projects.

If I had to cut this blog post short, I would leave you with this: creating search engine optimized content means creating content that’s on-brand, Googleable, and reader-focused.

SEO content is on-brand, Googleable, and reader-focused.

You can take a big sigh of relief when you realize that your ideal audience has already created this content for you. You’re not pulling a problem out of thin air. Likewise, you’re not creating a solution out of thin air.

Your writing process is rooted in the public’s Google searches. This information is made available to you through keyword research tools, like Ahrefs and Moz.

On-Brand Blog Content

Staying on-brand includes what you say and how you say it (i.e. tone of voice). I’ll use some of my favorite small business owners as examples.

If I sold organic superfood desserts out of San Diego, I’m likely not going to research the keyword “Dallas brunch spots.” I’m also not going to write a blog post titled “How to Start a Cattle Farm.”

If I taught private drum lessons, I could write “5 Easy Steps to Assemble Your First Drum Kit,” instead of“5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Play the Drums.”

If I owned a window repair business, I could research keywords like “home maintenance” and “energy efficient windows.” If I’m known for my approachable and funny tone of voice, I could use the blog post title “3 Quick Ways to Clean Your Windows When You’d Rather be Watching Lord of the Rings,” instead of “How to Clean Your Windows.”

Going Off-Brand

Have you ever gone skydiving? What’s the difference between anti-gravity and zero-gravity?

Right now you’re probably wondering, “Is Kat glitching? I thought we were talking about blogging!” It’s kind of like sitting front row at an Andrea Bocelli concert, and all of a sudden you hear him singing “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus. It could be fascinating, but you’re also like, “How did we get here?!”

I’m taking this silly moment to remind you — you don’t have to be dull or bland. Hold onto what makes your brand stand out from the crowd. However, if you want the Google algorithm to favor your website, you must stay on topic.

Going off-brand will confuse and repel your ideal audience.

That’s why you conduct keyword research. You eliminate guesswork, while strategically choosing a variety of keywords that all point to common themes and goals within your niche.

Googleable Blog Content

First, what makes content un-Googleable?

Misalignment with search intent.

“The last time I walked my dog I fell” is a highly unlikely search term. Google would not understand which problem needs to be solved. Do you need knee doctor? Non slip shoes? A dog walker? The intention is unclear.

People don’t conduct Google searches that way, so you shouldn’t position your content that way. Instead, create blog post titles and headings that match search intent. “Top 5 Ways to Strengthen Your Knees Without a Gym” or “7 Best Dog Walking Services for Busy Dog Moms” could work for this example.

Yes, you should still include creativity, context, and stories. That’s more so for the body of the text. Your titles and headings (which organize different sections of your blog post) get to be simple, based on search intent. This eliminates the excuses of “I’m not a good writer” and “I’m just not creative.”

Googleable content is to the point and connects real people with real solutions. It’s the type of content that both Google robots and your human readers appreciate.

Reader-Focused Blog Content

Ultimately, SEO is a means to an end. Yes, I enjoy the process. I’m glad if you do, too. Yet, the true purpose behind SEO skill development is people. We strive to improve our internet visibility in order to serve our people well.

Find your sweet spot between SEO-focused writing and relationship-building writing. Both can be professional. Don’t underestimate your readers. They will notice any attempts to hack the Google algorithm by overusing keywords.

Yes, prioritize keyword research, but also make sure you’re tending to your audience’s communication style. You have permission to dump a couple SEO rules here and there, if it means truly getting through to your audience.

In just under one month, we’re going to have a new number assigned to our current reality.

2023?!? Woah! That happened fast!

A lot of us are about to get super excited about new year’s resolutions.

I give props to anyone looking for ways to improve their personal and professional lives. But the fact that some people feel limited to making changes only at the top of the year is kind of a stinker.

Why wait for January? Let’s start in December!

If you’re looking for ways to re-center yourself this month, this is for you.

In honor of the winter season (which can be emotionally and mentally dark and challenging)… my motto for the month is “make your own sunshine.” It’s all about being proactive and empowering yourself now, not later.

4 Ways to Prepare for the New Year

Consider this a quick guide to experiencing a beautiful upward spiral in your life.

Communicate your needs.

Because we can’t assume others know.

Yes, we hope that the people in our inner circle understand us. But no one is a mind reader. Help them help you.

Let yourself openly express your feelings and opinions with key people in your life:

people in your household

people at work / on your professional team

whoever has a seat at your table

Leverage your cycles.

Because struggling upstream proves nothing to no one.

Quietly and miserably pushing through tough conditions doesn’t necessarily prove how great you are. Instead, you just get to suffer more, and so do the people around you.

Look for healthy — emphasis on “healthy” — shortcuts that can save you time and energy.

Examine how the following factors might affect your mood and productivity:

daily energy fluctuations

menstrual cycle syncing

sleep cycle

Move your energy.

Because you are not your body, but you are its greatest caretaker.

Our bodies deliver clear and potent messages to us when it’s time to change something about our mentality or lifestyle.

There’s so much that can be said about the relationship between personal wellness, professional success, and healthy relationships.

One quick thing I’ll point out is that your body has tons of answers, but our mainstream education system has failed to teach you this.

Take some time to notice the connections between these parts of your body:

Your throat and digestive tract.

Your heart and spine.

Your feet and hands.

(If you’d like me to dive deeper, please leave a comment below.)

Present your future.

Because tomorrow will be affected by today’s decisions.

“Present your future” is my play on words that means this: Bring the future to the forefront of your mind. But make sure you do this in a balanced manner.

Find a way to be forward thinking without becoming totally consumed by fear or anxiety about the future. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, but that doesn’t mean we should throw tomorrow out with the trash.

Take a preventive approach to your health

Save your resources for a rainy day (energy, time, money, food).

Take a humble approach to social conflict.

Remain present with today while understanding tomorrow is connected.

Perhaps you want to journal about these four points, or discuss it with someone important in your life.

Moral of the story? Don’t wait for society’s timeline to give you permission to invest in yourself!
