In today’s digital landscape, small business owners and content creators often find themselves torn between social media marketing and enhancing their websites. Everywhere you turn, there’s a new piece of digital marketing advice like, “Don’t bother working on your website, since Instagram is where it’s at!” Others might suggest, “If you have a great website, don’t worry about posting on social media all the time.” I believe we can find a balance between the two.

That balance is totally up to you as the business owner. But to help you through this process, I want you to consider the difference between owning and renting your online presence. I’ve got to say there are real risks associated with relying solely on social media platforms.

Let’s take a quick moment to explore the cons of renting digital space. I’ll also provide insights into combining ownership and renting to maximize your reach and safeguard your business’s content.

The Risks of Renting Digital Space

When you don’t rent and own your digital content, you’re putting all your eggs in one basket. Focusing solely on building a social media presence without simultaneously growing your email list or website traffic can be likened to renting a part of the internet. This arrangement leaves you susceptible to sudden changes, much like a tenant whose landlord decides to replace them with someone else.

You might think avoiding the whole website thing is simpler…until suddenly your favorite social media app catches a mood and decides to delete your account. Or your account gets hacked!

Who wants to spend hours and hours rebuilding a social media account they worked so hard for? No one. But if this should happen to you (knock on wood) having a website would make it easy to copy and paste impactful content onto your new social media account.

In a less drastic scenario…

…Creating and editing content within specific apps, such as Instagram or TikTok, comes with inherent risks. Instagram might unexpectedly delete your draft, while TikTok might upload your video without its original audio, altering your intended message.

This is why drafting your content outside of social media apps is a must-do. This means no matter what you post on LinkedIn, TikTok, Instagram, etc., a copy of it always lives in Google Drive, Notion, or wherever you store your digital content.

Owning Your Audience: Key Strategies

When I say “owning” I’m talking about owning the platform through which you communicate with a segment of your audience.

To truly own your audience and mitigate the risks of renting, consider these strategies:

Sales Emails

Establishing an email marketing strategy, including well-crafted sales emails, can help you connect with your audience on a more personal level than social media. When people opt-in to receive your emails, you gain confidence that they genuinely want to hear from you.

Email Newsletters

Regular newsletters keep your audience engaged and informed, strengthening your relationship with them. These are similar to sales emails, but newsletters typically have more substance, more storytelling, and multiple calls to action.

Blogging

Creating a blog on your website allows you to showcase your expertise, enhance your authority, and capture organic search traffic through SEO-friendly content.

Informative Web Pages

Craft web pages that provide in-depth explanations of your services, products, or programs, offering valuable information to potential customers.

Balancing Ownership & Renting

As I said earlier, I’m hopeful that more content creators and small business owners can find a balance between renting and owning. You don’t have to pick just one. To be extra clear, here’s how I imagine you can rent and own your digital content:

Diversify Your Content Creation

Rather than relying solely on rented platforms, consider a holistic approach. Combine your social media presence with a website and email marketing integration.

Prioritize Ownership & Content Repurposing

Whether you hire contractors (web copywriter, designer, developer, etc.) or do it all yourself, invest energy in building and maintaining your website. Add SEO-friendly content to improve your Google ranking, ensuring that your digital presence is not solely dependent on social media algorithms.

Over time, place your blog posts at the center of your content repurposing plan, allowing short-form social media content to naturally flow from your long-form blog content.

Email Marketing

Create an email marketing account and design lead magnets to grow your email list. Advertise your lead magnets throughout your social media feeds and stories. In your emails, include both relationship-building content and persuasive sales emails to engage with your subscribers effectively.

By striking a balance between owning and renting digital space, entrepreneurs can navigate the ever-evolving digital landscape with confidence. It’s essential not to underestimate the power of a diverse online presence, which provides stability and resilience in an ever-changing online world. Remember, your digital journey should combine the best of both worlds for sustained success.

As a savvy entrepreneur, you already know that building a thriving business involves more than just offering a fantastic product or service. It’s about connecting with your audience, building trust, and providing value well before the dollars start rolling in. That’s where blogging comes into play, and let me tell you, it’s no longer just a hobby for bored millennials looking to vent.

Let’s quickly explore why blogging is a must for any entrepreneur in the digital age.

Blogging Speeds Up Your Web Traffic Growth

Sure, blogging may not be entirely free, as it does require an investment of your valuable time and energy. However, compared to shelling out big bucks for ads that may only reach a limited audience based on your ad budget, blogging offers a cost-effective way to drive traffic to your website.

With well-crafted content, you can attract organic traffic from search engines, social media shares, and referrals.

The best part? These visitors are genuinely interested in what you have to offer, making them more likely to convert into loyal customers.

Blogging Multiplies Your Social Media Content

One of the remarkable benefits of maintaining a blog is the content multiplication effect it has on your social media strategy. I’ve found that dedicating just one hour to create an Instagram post becomes a breeze when you can draw from a well of blog posts.

Instead of racking your brain for fresh social media ideas every day, you can repurpose your blog content into engaging carousels, eye-catching reels, static posts, or compelling stories. It’s like having a content treasure trove at your disposal, saving you time and ensuring your social media presence remains active and engaging.

Boost Your Confidence and Sales Skills

As an entrepreneur, your ability to communicate effectively about your business is key. Blogging offers you the opportunity to refine your written communication skills from various angles. The more you write about your business (its impact, its value, etc.) the more confident you’ll become in conveying your message, whether online or in person.

Think of it like practicing for a school presentation; the more you rehearse, the easier it becomes to captivate your audience. As you hone your blogging skills, you’ll find it much smoother to sell your products or services with conviction.

Build a Valuable Email List

Your email list is a goldmine for nurturing leads and turning them into loyal customers. With a blog, you can create a monthly newsletter that not only features industry tips but also includes your own insightful blog posts.

By positioning your blog as a trusted resource, you not only provide value to your subscribers but also convey your trust in your expertise. Trust begets trust, and when leads see that you believe in your content, they’ll be more inclined to trust your products or services.

You Don’t Have to Be a Wordsmith to Get Started

Now, here’s the best part: you don’t need to be the next Shakespeare to start a blog. All it takes is a keyword research tool, a willingness to learn from initial failures, and a vibey playlist to keep you motivated.

Plus, nowadays you have a wealth of AI-powered writing and editing tools at your fingertips.

AI Tools for Blogging

My personal favorite ways to use artificial intelligence as a content writer are:

Grammarly for proofreading

Capitalize My Title for headline optimization

Google Docs’ voice typing feature for hands-free writing

ChatGPT for organizing messy bullet points

These tools make blogging accessible to anyone, regardless of their writing level.

What We Covered

This one was short and sweet, because…if you’re not into it, you’re not into it. Don’t force yourself to start a blog if you’re not actually going to keep up with it.

But still, I’ll say blogging is a powerful tool that most modern entrepreneurs shouldn’t overlook. It not only accelerates your web traffic growth, multiplies your social media content, and boosts your confidence and sales skills but also helps you build a valuable email list and requires no special writing talent to get started.

So, what are you waiting for? Start blogging today, and watch your business flourish in ways you never imagined.

In the fast-paced world of digital marketing, having a website is non-negotiable. It’s your online storefront, your brand’s digital identity, and the hub of all your online activities. But did you know that taking your website to the next level through blogging can supercharge your digital marketing efforts?

Let’s look at a few reasons why your website is vital, why blogging is a game-changer, and the best platforms to make it all happen seamlessly.

Every Website Needs a Strong Foundation

Before we get into the power of blogging, let’s start with the basics. Every website needs two fundamental components: a web hosting company and a content management system (CMS).

Gosh – my kinesiology, microbiology, and medical ethics professors would be so confused as to why I’m writing about this. But anywho…

The fear that often haunts website owners is the idea of having to redo their entire website shortly after investing in one. Why? The culprit is often an unfriendly hosting provider or CMS.

Why Would You Need to Switch?

Imagine spending time, creativity, and resources to build your dream website, only to realize that your current host and CMS are not user-friendly. This could lead to frustration, limited growth potential, and a less-than-ideal online presence.

But no worries; there *is* a solution, and that is to understand the best website platforms out there.

Unlocking Your Website’s Full Potential

With the right foundation, you can grow your website as much as you desire. One of the most effective ways to attract new leads and enhance your online presence is through SEO-friendly blog posts.

To get there, you want to first choose a strong web host and CMS, so you can keep building your blog archive without looking back.

Choosing the Best Web Hosting Company: Bluehost

When it comes to web hosting, Bluehost stands out as a top choice. It’s what I use for this website, in fact!

Here are some qualities that set Bluehost apart:

User-Friendly Interface

Bluehost offers an intuitive and user-friendly experience. You won’t need to worry about technical complexities. Instead, you can focus on what matters most – your content and your audience.

It’s especially well-suited for beginners who may not have much technical expertise. Bluehost’s control panel is intuitive and easy to navigate, making it simple to set up and manage websites, domains, email accounts, and other hosting-related tasks.

Performance & Reliability

Bluehost has a solid uptime record, which is vital for preventing website downtime and potential loss of traffic and revenue. Bluehost invests in robust server infrastructure and technology to ensure fast loading times and optimal website performance.

WordPress Integration

Bluehost has a strong partnership with WordPress and is officially recommended by WordPress.org. Yeah, they’re basically besties for life.

Bluehost offers one-click WordPress installation and tailored hosting plans optimized for WordPress websites. This integration makes it an ideal choice for users who want to build and manage WordPress-powered websites.

And even if you outsource your website project to someone else, they’ll have a super easy time with it.

While other hosting providers also support WordPress, Bluehost’s close relationship with the platform ensures seamless compatibility and access to WordPress-specific tools and resources.

Speaking of WordPress…

Choosing the Best CMS: WordPress

As opposed to your web hosting company, which works behind the scenes, your CMS is the core reason why the public can view your website. If you were to purchase your domain on Bluehost without investing in a CMS, then you’d have an invisible website that’s doing absolutely nothing for you, your audience, or your business.

So. For your content management needs, WordPress is the way to go. Here’s why:

User-Friendliness

Having worked with clients who used platforms like Squarespace and Wix, I can confidently say that WordPress is the most intuitive CMS. I’m not totally judging, but just kinda sorta judging.

Whether you’re adjusting brand colors and fonts, or ensuring your website looks great on various devices, WordPress simplifies it all. Making changes across your entire website is a breeze, unlike other platforms.

Mobile Optimization

In today’s mobile-centric world, you must have a website that shines on all devices. WordPress makes this seamless, ensuring your site looks visually appealing on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices. The last thing you want is to publish a beautifully written blog post or web page that gets cut off on a mobile device.

I’ve honestly had a lot of fun updating my website, thanks to the ease of Bluehost combined with WordPress. I won’t go on and on, but I recommend checking out your payment options, one of which is $2.95/month. That particular package saves you 40% with a 36-month plan.

Get Bluehost for Your WordPress Site

Adding Plugins to the Best Website Platforms

We’ve lightly danced around the subject of blogging. Here’s where your blogging process gets even easier. Once you’ve chosen Bluehost and WordPress as your website’s foundation, consider installing these essential plugins:

Yoast SEO

This plugin will help you optimize your web pages and blog posts, making them more searchable and increasing your online visibility. This one’s almost too good to be true; its real-time writing suggestions are like an SEO cheat sheet.

Site Kit by Google

Track your website traffic and gain insights into how your behind-the-scenes changes impact lead generation. It’s essential to understand how visitors discover your website and what keeps them engaged.

Elementor

Over time, you may want to enhance your web pages further. Elementor is a fantastic tool that allows you to do just that, ensuring your website stays fresh and engaging. Whether you’re tech-savvy or not, this plugin allows you to show off your style with animations and intuitive designs.

What We Covered: Best Website Platforms

Friendo, remember this: Regardless of your industry, your website is the cornerstone of your digital marketing efforts, and blogging takes it to the next level. By choosing the best website platforms — Bluehost and WordPress — and utilizing essential plugins, you’ll be well on your way to creating a successful online presence that attracts and engages your target audience.

“It only takes a minute if you wait ‘til the last minute.” Okay, maybe not the best advice if you want to promote your business with care. But the other day I set myself up at a coffee shop only 90 minutes before they closed. I had two specific client projects to complete, and I knew it was now or never.

Not the time to scroll through Instagram, comparing myself with other marketers or content/copywriters.

Also not the time to second guess these client projects, which were already 75% done.

There was no time for overthinking.

I did this to/for myself, knowing there would be a sense of urgency.

But what I didn’t know was that the coffee shop would be playing a fun Beatles playlist! So I got to sing and bop in my chair while writing:

SEO-friendly content for a law firm

a lighthearted and personable sales email for a skin spa

Ninety minutes later, I completed my to-do list AND some.

What about you?

What’s the deal with your creative process lately? Have you been overthinking it? Losing yourself in the social media scroll?

Ever thought about adding urgency to your process? No, the point isn’t to feel stressed outta your mind while a blank Canva slide stares back at you.

Instead, deadlines help you realize you can produce effective content when:

life gets busy

you don’t have an on-staff marketing person

your business demands a hundred-and-one things from you

Look at the law firm and skin spa I mentioned. Before hiring me they were:

Struggling to understand why their website wasn’t converting clients as frequently as they’d hoped

Letting some of their platforms fall to the wayside (i.e. LinkedIn page with only a name and profile pic)

Sleeping on an email list they had built for 5+ years

Now, they have the support they need to spend sufficient time with their clients. And because of the urgency we’ve created together, they’re reaping the benefits of a marketing strategy that speaks to people they’re excited to serve.

Blogging is dead as much as email marketing is dead. Clearly, neither of them are actually dead, but you hear this a lot from people who are only about social media marketing and don’t see the value in website content writing.

Here’s the reason why it’s a problem to go to either extreme.

If you only count on social media you never know when an app might crash or your account might get deleted or restricted.

Plus, you also miss out on the SEO benefits of having a website full of solid content that speaks to your ideal audience.

On the flip side, if you rely on your website as the only place to communicate with your audience (keeping in mind their demographics and psychographics)…

You could be missing out on a natural way to convert your long-form website content (blog posts) into short-form content for places like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn.

Finding a middle ground between the two gives you an endless source of content ideas, because you get to repurpose your content instead of using each idea only once.

Simplifying your content marketing strategy in this way makes a lot of sense if you’re trying to be that entrepreneur who *doesn’t* burn out.

So, no blogging and email aren’t dead. But forceful productivity is.

Lead acquisition – sometimes referred to as lead generation – is an ongoing process of finding individuals or businesses that your business can serve. If you’re a business-to-consumer (B2C) company, then you’re helping an individual become your customer. If you’re a business-to-business company (B2B) company, then you’re helping another business become your customer.

In both cases, you are looking for people who have a specific question or challenge that can be addressed by your product or service. The process of acquiring leads is key for selling your products or services. No leads means no business means no money.

What Is the Lead Acquisition Journey?

Simply put, lead acquisition is the set of activities you practice to get new people “in the door.”

The goal of the lead acquisition journey is to generate revenue from each lead. Your goal amount of revenue needs to make sense for the amount of time and money it takes to provide your product or service in the first place.

Getting new people in the door involves a collection of touchpoints or communications, whether these touchpoints happen traditionally (e.g. in-person events and direct mail-outs) or digitally (e.g. phone calls and social media content).

On top of that, acquiring quality leads – as opposed to the people who don’t believe in your product or service – requires you to build a memorable brand. When your branding is well-planned, you can communicate in a way that consistently builds trust and pleasantly surprises your audience. A well-served audience ends up realizing that your business can meet their needs in a way that other competitors cannot or have not done already.

If we focus on digital marketing, then the lead acquisition process takes place on the internet. Specifically, businesses create content that lives on their websites, social media channels, and search engines. Although they serve distinct purposes, both copywriting and content writing (like SEO-friendly blogging) play a part in this.

Digital lead acquisition is also supported by proper website design, high-quality customer service, and other business operations.

Once a business identifies a productive method of finding leads online, it sticks with that method and eventually scales it (or increases its capacity) by building a team of employees or freelancers. Another way to scale your online lead acquisition is by investing in software or other technical support to speed up the processes that find potential customers.

How Does a Business Know Their Lead Acquisition Strategy Is Working?

By measuring cost per acquisition (CPA) and cost per lead (CPL), you can tell if your lead acquisition strategy is helping you reach your goals.

If the limits of your budget are being pushed, but you’re not really getting as many paying clients or customers as you think you could, then it’s worth pivoting your strategy. You may find a more cost-efficient and time-efficient way to make your brand visible online and build relationships with your audience.

How do you compare how many leads you’re getting to the amount you *could* be getting?

It comes down to “did you choose a target audience that actually exists and that actually could be interested in your product or service?” If you took time to conduct market research and competitor research as you were planning out your business, then you’ve probably chosen a target audience with tons of potential.

So with that in mind, move forward in confidence, knowing that there is room for you to grow and there are still more people out there waiting to find someone just like you.

On a more practical level, you can understand what’s working and what’s not by setting time-oriented goals and tracking your actual results.

Between qualitative data (human feedback, thoughts, feelings, experiences) and quantitative data (numbers, percentages, rates, graphs) you’ll be able to paint a picture of the sort of messages and processes you want to hold onto and which ones no longer serve your brand.

By collecting and interpreting the data, you can understand whether you’re finding more unqualified leads or qualified leads. When it’s time to interpret your data, you can answer questions like these:

“What is it about our online messaging that attracts demographic A, when really our goal is to attract demographic B?”

“If we notice that demographic A signs up for our email list but doesn’t end up buying our product/service, then how can we find more people within demographic B?”

Next, let’s put this idea of acquiring leads online into specific terms.

Acquiring Leads Through Social Media and Website Traffic

Earlier, we talked about writing copy and content to draw more attention online. A great way to do this is by integrating your social media strategy with your website content strategy.

As opposed to only focusing on social media, connecting the two will give you a higher chance of driving traffic (i.e. internet users) toward a concrete decision of buying from you (or not).

In terms of social media, some channels are going to be more effective for converting leads, or getting them to make a decision. On the other hand, some social media channels are more useful for building brand awareness. With this in mind, if you were to only create content for two social media platforms, be sure to pick one for conversion and the other for awareness.

Another distinction to pay attention to is this: Your brand and target audience are going to align with certain content formats over others.

Let’s break down these ideas a bit further.

Website First

When you prioritize your website as your home base for content, you adopt the advantage of search engines. Every day, 8.5 billion searches are being conducted online – and that’s only on Google!

Since there are massive amounts of humans out there waiting to learn about your brand, you might as well start writing long-form blog content that aligns with search engines like Google.

Pro Tip: Use a keyword research tool like Moz to identify blog post topics that Google users will enjoy.

Social Second

You’re never going to catch me claiming that social media is irrelevant to your digital marketing strategy. Between Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter, there’s great potential to acquire qualified leads each and every day.

The reason I place social media after website content is for logistical purposes. Converting long-form blog posts into short-form social media content is simpler than trying to piece five different Instagram posts together. When you already have one blog post that’s organized into five different sections, creating five new pieces of short-form content is a no-brainer.

This sort of reverse engineering can be done for both your conversion channel and your awareness channel.

Conversion Channel

I won’t pretend like I know what’s absolutely best for your business. Instead, I’ll just tell you what I’ve done for mine.

Instagram has become my conversion channel. I can say this because I’ve intentionally marketed my services and digital products there and because I’ve gained the most clients there, as opposed to Facebook or TikTok.

When you choose your main social media channel for conversion, make it a point to post content that reflects the way you show off your products or services throughout your website.

This concept becomes even clearer once we talk about the awareness channel.

Awareness Channel

Again, do not necessarily take this as advice. This just happens to be my jam at the moment.

TikTok has become my primary awareness channel. Yes, the content I post on TikTok sometimes overlaps with that of Instagram. (Sometimes, I’ll post the exact same face-to-camera videos and carousels.)

However, I give my TikTok audience tons of personal stories, casual conversations, and unplanned reflections on entrepreneurship and life in your thirties. The accounts that only follow me on Instagram won’t see that side of my brand.

But that’s okay because I want my awareness channel to entertain a relatively large group of people. Of that group, I want a select few to become curious about my services and digital products, which they can learn more about on Instagram.

I’ll wrap this up by saying: Choose your main social media channel for awareness, and don’t be afraid to veer away from the messaging that’s found on your website.

If you’re still with me, I’d like to chat about using various content formats to acquire leads.

Content Formats

Of all the possible ways leads could interact with your brand online, they all come down to three formats: written word, audio, and video. I encourage you to choose your favorite of the three and post that consistently.

This doesn’t mean just choose the one that’s easiest for you because you’re “not that creative.” (Everyone’s creative. Give yourself a little more credit.)

Instead, tap into the specific format that is best received by your target audience. After all, these are the folks who will someday become your paying customers, clients, or students.

Written Word

Blog posts

Social media captions

Typography-based carousel posts

Audio

Podcasts

Voiceovers

Video

Reels

YouTube Shorts

TikTok

Videos uploaded to other social media platforms

Of course, I’m gonna vouch for blog posts, big time! But strategically combining the three formats is even better.

Inevitably, all of these formats begin with writing down your ideas anyway. So you’ve already knocked out writing. Now you can start thinking about audio and video some more.

Regardless of your content channels or formats, you’ll want to make sure you are staying on-brand when you show up online.

Stay On-Brand

When you were developing your business you should have spent time designing your brand. You probably spent time not just creating the visual elements, but your brand voice, personality, and behaviors.

As you’re preparing to reach more leads through your digital marketing, make sure that you’re consistently and accurately representing your brand on all of your online platforms.

The caveat here is that you should be shifting your presentation and style just a bit for each social media platform. Let’s face it, each app has a different vibe and purpose, even though they all work toward the common goals of lead generation, brand awareness, and relationship building.

When you stay on-brand you can efficiently move cold, warm, and hot leads along the customer journey (this is referred to as lead generation).

Creating Different Types of Content for Cold, Warm, and Hot Leads

In addition to the questions of where and which formats to post, you want to answer this question:

“How can my content meet people exactly where they are?”

Here’s a super simple place to start: Each week, post one piece of content for cold leads, one for warm leads, and one for hot leads.

In the world of marketing and sales, we qualify leads by temperature to categorize how close they are to becoming a paying customer. The desired sequence goes from cold to warm to hot. The ultimate goal is to develop a pool of hot leads that become repeat customers and tell their friends, family, and peers about your business.

You can think of it this way:

Cold Leads Content

Cold leads barely know your brand exists – or they might not know at all. They require content that makes them say, “Oh! We have a couple things in common.”

This definitely isn’t the time to sell through your content. Focus instead on serving these leads with educational, inspirational, and entertaining content.

(It’s worth noting that you should seek to educate, inspire, and entertain all types of leads.)

Warm Leads Content

Warm leads are aware of your brand, and they’re starting to warm up to you. Still, they might not fully grasp how you can help them solve their problems or make their lives better.

You can start to “push” these folks by getting more specific about their challenges and life experiences, as well as possible solutions.

Hot Leads Content

If these folks won’t buy from you, no one will! Hot leads have been through the journey of discovering your brand, learning from you, checking out your products and services, and identifying you with a positive life transformation.

To start creating content that speaks to cold, warm, and hot leads, answer the following questions:

Where do these leads exist? (Email list? Instagram audience? Sales call calendar?)

How do these leads feel about my brand? (Are they learning about us? Are they unsure if they need us? Are they considering whether or not they can afford us?)

What gets these leads to the next step? (Hint: For all three groups, you’ll want to invest time and energy into them before expecting any commitment in return.)

What Are Some Useful Tools for Lead Acquisition?

When it comes to acquiring and managing your leads, the list of software and automation tools goes on and on. Here are just a few that you might find helpful:

Content Management System

Your blog is made possible with a content management system (CMS). Your CMS first requires a web hosting company.

My top recommendation is to host your website with Bluehost and manage your content with WordPress. (I’ve used both over the years, and they’re super user-friendly.)

Email Marketing System

Email is your primary way of taking your written content out of the public eye and interacting with your leads on an exclusive platform. The cool thing is these interactions take place without the videos, sounds, and distractions of social media.

ConvertKit has got to be the best email marketing system for small businesses, as well as businesses with huge teams and audiences.

Social Media

Business-to-Business (B2B): LinkedIn and Twitter

Business-to-Consumer (B2C): Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook

Tools for Staying Organized as You Acquire Leads

Customer Relationship Management (CRM)

Salesforce

Hubspot

Cognism

Callrail

Notion

FAQ: Lead Acquisition

How much do leads cost?
Your cost per lead changes depending on your industry, as well as your methods for acquiring leads online or in person.

What kinds of businesses need leads?
All companies need leads. It’s not a question of whether or not you get them. If you’ve made any amount of money in your business, then, yes, you have successfully converted leads. The question is more so how to find them consistently and in a way that doesn’t drain your resources.

How does SEO play a role in lead acquisition?
Whether you run a digital business or you have a brick-and-mortar location, you can invest more energy into your digital marketing strategy in order to connect with leads that represent your ideal client/customer. It’s recommended that you use local SEO for your physical presence and on-page SEO no matter what type of business you run. On-page SEO, off-page SEO, plus technical SEO is an awesome combination. BONUS: You can hire a content writer to create SEO-friendly blog posts that move leads along the journey of being your brand’s biggest fan!

Wrap-Up: Lead Acquisition

Whether you realize it or not, lead acquisition is already taking place within your business. The question now is how is it happening, and does this align with your sales and marketing goals?

Your blog and social media channels are core pieces of your digital marketing strategy. Learning how to write more efficiently – and in a way that properly reflects your brand – is key to turning leads into paying customers. This guide will give you fifteen ways to improve your writing process for your blog and social media.

You keep hearing that you should be sharing more content than you currently do. This leaves you frustrated because you don’t want to sit at your computer all day just to get out a few sentences that don’t even sound like your brand. But you also don’t want your blog, Instagram, Facebook, and all the other places you show up online to stay empty.

I promise you there’s a way to make this entire process easier. First, let’s look at the purpose behind writing more often for your online platforms.

How Does My Blog Help Me Get Customers?

Your blog is a powerful relationship-builder. It acts as another branch of your business, in addition to the products or services that your business is most known for.

By sharing educational, inspirational, and entertaining blog posts with the internet, you’re able to add readers to your audience. (Hopefully, you’re capturing these readers in your email list.)

Over time these readers become more invested in your brand’s personality and worldview, eventually buying whatever you’re selling.

A blog written with search engine optimization (SEO) in mind will organically help your business become more searchable online. This allows you to have a constant flow of new eyes on your website.

How Do My Social Media Channels Help Me Get Customers?

Social media allows you to engage with other people in creative and personable ways. Whether it’s ideal customers, influencers, or industry peers, social media helps you demonstrate to these people why you’re a top choice within your niche.

As you combine written word, audio, and video, you convince your ideal customers to opt into your email list, visit your website, or follow whichever call to action is present.

Regardless of the final form of your content – written word, audio, or video – it all starts with writing. If you want to start sharing higher-quality content on a more consistent basis, then it’s time to improve your writing process.

Tools and Resources That Will Help Your Writing Process

Outsourcing

Investing money into this area of your business, so you have time to focus on your specialty – and the areas of your business you don’t want anyone else touching.

Proofreader

A proofreader helps you toward the backend of your writing process, by finetuning what you’ve already written. They check for grammar, spelling, and punctuation, as well as a general sense of readability.

Contributing Writer

If you’re looking for help earlier on in the writing process you can hire a writer who has a unique perspective on your specific field of work. Their name will show up in the byline, meaning they keep the authorship rights.

Ghostwriter

As opposed to a contributing writer, a ghostwriter does not keep authorship rights. Their identity remains hidden (hence, “ghost”). For this reason, they tend to charge premium rates, as opposed to other types of writers.

Outsourcing is the most hands-off option when it comes to creating content on a more frequent basis than you currently do. The content practically gets handed to you without you having to do keyword research or planning.

In the case of KQ Writing Studio, we provide video calls with our monthly ghostwriting packages, to make sure our clients are on the same page as us, creatively speaking.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

I consider using artificial intelligence (AI) as a midpoint between outsourcing and doing it yourself. Since AI lacks the human heart and mind, you’ll still want to edit and add your personal touches after AI writes your content.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a chatbot that collects information all over the internet to provide focused responses to your requests. When you type scripts (or directions) into the chat box, the bot starts generating content based on those directions. You can continue to tweak the chatbot’s first piece of content by adding new requests or prompts to the chat box.

Grammarly

Grammarly is a typing assistant that optimizes content of all lengths and styles. You can either copy and paste what you’ve written in a Google Doc or begin typing within Grammarly itself. Once the entire piece is there, you can check Grammarly’s scoreboard, which indicates how well your writing turned out, in terms of delivery, engagement, and tone of voice.

Text to Speech Reader

Text to Speech Reader is a digital reader that helps you hear your writing spoken out loud at various speeds. Reviewing your content audibly adds another layer of proofreading that might be missed while you’re reading your work. This text-to-speech app allows you to simply listen for any possible errors or awkward moments within your content.

WordCounter

WordCounter is an online editor that keeps track of key numbers related to your written content. This helps a ton if you’re trying to meet certain quotas, like character count, word count, paragraph count, and keyword density.

Dictionaries and Thesauri

Sometimes a particular word is on the tip of your tongue, and you need extra help communicating the idea in your head. When you keep a dictionary or thesaurus handy, you can quickly find the right words to use in your blog posts and social media captions.

When I was growing up, we had hard copy dictionaries and thesauri, but now we have plenty of digital options with additional functions. Beyond defining words and listing synonyms, these tools demonstrate how to use each word in the right context.

YourDictionary.com

WordsInASentence.com

WordHippo.com

Improving Your Writing Process On Your Own

If you’re not quite at the point of hiring a writer to do the work for you, it’s time to add writing sessions to your calendar. If you’re about ready to give up writing content, please don’t. I have good news! You’re not a bad writer. You just haven’t energized your writing process with these twelve key elements:

Search engine optimization (SEO)

Incubation

Signature

Imagery

Deadlines

Flow

Contrast

Hyperbole

In medias res

Breath

Mirroring

Teasers

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Writing from the perspective of search engine optimization allows you to touch on the ideas that matter to both the algorithm and humans. Do this by conducting keyword research and putting your reader’s needs first.

Incubation

Remove yourself from your rough draft instead of forcing words onto the page. Give yourself time to walk around or work on another project. Afterward, you can edit and proofread your writing with a fresh pair of eyes.

Signature

Give yourself permission to go against the grain in order to demonstrate your unique writing style. Remember that you will attract your ideal audience when you let your distinct personality and perspective shine.

Imagery

How vibrant is your language? Can your reader imagine what you’re writing without having to try too hard? Are you supporting your words with graphs, images, or infographics when appropriate?

Deadlines

You might be frustrated by your writing pace simply because you haven’t given yourself any deadlines. Fill in your calendar with due dates so that you know what you need to complete on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

Flow

Yes, your writing might be technically sound, but does it come from an inspired place within you? This is when I tell you to dump the rules and listen to your intuition.

Contrast

When you present an opposing view of a single subject, you help your reader think critically about where they stand and whether or not they relate to your point of view.

Hyperbole

Using exaggerated and unreasonable statements can capture your reader’s attention and create a million moments of laughter, which inspires further connection.

In Medias Res

This element automatically builds your reader’s curiosity and willingness to continue reading. Instead of starting with a typical introduction, I began in the middle of my story or statement. Here you are. I think it worked.

Breath

When you speak out loud, you naturally pause to breathe. Do this in your writing by adding extra dashes. Line breaks. Shortened sentences. Ellipses and…parentheses.

Mirroring

As you’re figuring out your unique writing style, look at other pieces of content that you find appealing and easy to read. Apply that style or flow to your specific subject matter.

Teasers

You don’t have to fit all of your ideas into a single piece of content. When you want to wrap up your current topic, promise your reader you’ll expand on it or create a part two in the future.

Wrap-Up: 15 Ways to Improve Your Writing Process

There’s no such thing as a perfect writing process, but these fifteen ideas will certainly help:

Outsourcing

Artificial intelligence (AI)

Dictionaries and thesauri

Search engine optimization (SEO)

Incubation

Signature

Imagery

Deadlines

Flow

Contrast

Hyperbole

In medias res

Breath

Mirroring

Teasers

It’s time to dump your fear of doing things the wrong way. Go with your gut.

If you feel an internal nudge to share a heartfelt message, respond to it by grabbing a pen and paper or hopping in front of your laptop. Allow what’s coming out to simply be. Drop the self-criticism.

Someone out there might be waiting to hear exactly what you have to say.

While there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to making your business more visible online, there are some basic digital marketing steps you don’t want to skip. Keep reading to see how my Notion template can help.

Coming up with a marketing plan is not a one-time task. It’s a constant cycle of:

testing out methods you think will work

gathering and evaluating the results

eliminating what doesn’t align with your goals

staying persistent with the methods that yield positive results

As a creator, freelancer, or entrepreneur, you have to be willing to stick to a plan but also change with the times. This means staying up-to-date with trends happening within your niche or industry. It also means breaking up your larger marketing strategy into smaller, time-oriented milestones.

A successful digital marketing strategy requires flexibility, as well as structure.

In this guide, I explain how to plan and organize your digital content for a year full of growth for your personal or collective brand. And I explain how to use my Notion template to make it all happen.

Let’s get started!

Where Do Entrepreneurs Go Wrong With Marketing?

As a business owner, the way your products and services are portrayed online in 2024 is completely up to you. Your branding, copywriting, and customer service play a huge part in this. So do content writing and marketing. Before I share one of the best ways to keep your content organized throughout the year, let’s look at what not to do.

Marketing Mistake #1: Paid Content Only

You rely on paid content/ads without gathering valuable information from your organic content performance. An effective paid advertising campaign requires an understanding of the types of content that get audience members engaged in the first place. This means starting with unpaid advertising AKA organic marketing.

Marketing Mistake #2: No Content Calendar

You don’t write down the majority of your content ideas because you expect them to live in your head until you’re ready to bring them to life. All of a sudden you realize your social media accounts look like a ghost town, but you don’t have any posts in the roster. Then what happens? Social media users who aren’t yet familiar with your brand may choose to spend time with other accounts that are more up-to-date, even if you offer higher-quality products and services.

Marketing Mistake #3: Single-Use Content

You’re afraid of being repetitive. You use each content idea only once, instead of repurposing content between your blog and social media channels. You end up spending more time coming up with new ideas, rather than tweaking existing ideas and formatting them to fit the culture of each social media platform.

Marketing Mistake #4: Empty Website

You don’t have a blog within your website. Instead, you rely solely on social media, which leaves your fate in the hands of the Instagram gods, as I like to say. Your website isn’t full enough to help search engines understand why your website exists and, therefore, which search engine users to connect you with. Another way to put it: You’re giving Google no reason to move your website closer to page one in Google Search.

Marketing Mistake #5: Too Many Apps

You house your digital content ideas in too many places at once (i.e. the notes app on your phone, Google Docs, Instagram drafts, TikTok drafts, etc.). What you could do instead is use a single organizational tool that stores all of your content information in one place. Prime example: Notion.

Using Notion for Your Content Marketing

One of the best ways to keep your content organized throughout the year is with Notion. Notion is an organizational software that allows you to build pages, tables, and databases from scratch.

Entrepreneurs find Notion helpful for planning their business systems, storing contact information, and managing projects, among other functions.

In this case, I’m showing you how to use Notion to plan and organize content so you can continue to build your audience. Using Notion – the free or paid version – is a great way to lay out your content ideas before you need to post them.

You can download Notion as an app on your phone, tablet, or computer, as it’s available for iOS and Android.

Notion is:

free

highly customizable

easy to use at home, in the office, or on the go

This is exactly why I created a template for you to download today. It’s called 2024 Content Cafe, and it’s a one-stop shop for creating SEO-friendly content.

2024 Content Cafe Notion Template

Why did I create this awesome Notion template? Because digital marketing is changing in 2024.

It’s becoming more competitive, as the power of the internet continues to rise. Our world is becoming more modernized and internet-centric each day.

With this in mind, here’s what I suggest you prioritize: Place long-form blogging at the center of your content marketing strategy. I like to think of blog posts as skimmable thought processes that live on your website. You own your website, hence, you can remove, edit, and lengthen those thought processes at any point in time.

When you plan a simple, yet, value-packed blog post within 2024 Content Cafe, you can then repurpose it into short-form content for your various social media platforms.

via Jake Ward on LinkedIn

*Remember, focusing solely on social media is risky, because at the end of the day you do not own your social media platform; the app does.*

How to Use the 2024 Content Cafe Notion Template

After (1) visiting the shop and (2) clicking the “duplicate” button at the top right corner of the template, you’ll be able to customize 8 separate pages:

ICEE Soup

Competitors

Targeted Keywords

Content Calendar

Content Templates

ICEE Soup is honestly just a chance for me to create a silly pun. No one likes the thought of icy soup. The idea is polarizing, because soup is supposed to be hot. (I guess technically it would be a Playa Bowl, right?)

ICEE Soup is polarizing

This is the first concept I want you to consider when planning your content for 2024. Don’t be afraid to be polarizing. This means allowing your brand to stand out from the crowd by boldly demonstrating your opinions within your niche/industry, as well as your broader worldview.

Don’t be controversial just for attention’s sake, but do be clear about what your brand represents and why you offer your specific products or services. Inevitably, some people on the internet won’t like what you have to say, but don’t take that as discouragement. Instead, take it as a sign that you are clearly communicating yourself through your blog and social media channels.

ICEE Soup has variety

ICEE Soup is a pun, but it’s also an acronym. It stands for inspire, create, educate, and entertain. This sums up the second objective your content should be achieving. Posting only one type of content all the time would be boring for you and your audience. You’ll avoid this by posting a mix of content that does the following:

inspires your audience to take action

creates brand loyalty

educates your audience on a problem and solution

entertains your audience through authenticity

Continually cycling through these four categories prevents your online presence from feeling overly sales-y. The key is focusing on what you can offer your audience members, instead of assuming they should hand over their credit cards right away.

Each of the four ICEE Soup ingredients has its own tone and angle, but they all work towards the common goal of building familiarity and trust.

Competitors

After identifying what you want your brand to put out into the world, you’re one step closer to adding ideas to your content calendar. But first, take some time to research your competitors.

Competitor research is an important project to take on when you’re first building your brand and content strategy. But it’s also an ongoing project, no matter where you are in your business.

Reading what your competitors write, watching the videos they create, and listening to what they have to say is going to help you create your polarizing ICEE Soup content. It’s also going to keep you up-to-date with important conversations and trends within your industry.

An added bonus of tracking and researching your competitors is that you’ll have a go-to place for you to engage with other accounts on social media. We’ll touch on that in the “engagement tasks” section of this post.

Here’s where you’ll go to familiarize yourself with your competitors’ content marketing strategies:

Blog

Instagram

TikTok

Pinterest

Facebook

LinkedIn

YouTube

Email newsletters

Yes, keep a close eye on your competitors, but do not plagiarize or steal their content under any circumstance. But you already knew that!

Targeted Keywords

In 2024, you’re gonna want to get on Google’s good side. Specifically, start writing long-form (500+ words) blog posts about keywords people are already searching for.

Targeting or pinpointing keywords is the perfect way to create content with intention. Conducting keyword research helps you understand what search engine users are looking for and what kind of questions they want your blog and social media posts to answer.

Keyword research tools save you from having to come up with content ideas off the top of your head, since what your ideal audience wants is already laid out for you.

I’d say creating meaningful and SEO-friendly content isn’t impossible without keyword research tools like Ahrefs, Moz, Answer The Public, etc. However, it’s a heck of a lot easier with them.

Another way I like to explain this is: Your blog content needs to be both robotic and human.

how to create robotic and human content

Robotic Content: SEO-based, so it’s easy to plan and aligns with real-time web data

Human Content: Covers topics that people care about and that represent your brand well

With both elements in play, you get to build a blog that keeps you competitive, visible, and trustworthy within your niche.

Here’s the reality of marketing without SEO-friendly content: Google might not understand what to do about your website.

When your website doesn’t contain the keywords and topics that reflect the needs of your ideal customer or client, Google has little reason to bump you closer to page one.

Another way of saying this: Google decides not to show the reader your website within the results page, because your website doesn’t seem to match the search intent.

Think about this.

People have to learn, discover, or memorize your web address. But they don’t have to learn the questions they already have in their minds. They’re already asking specific questions because they’re a part of their reality.

This is why for every blog post you write, you should have one targeted keyword.

Hey, entrepreneur, riddle me this: Are you happy with the amount of content you’re posting on a regular basis?

You might be frustrated by your writing pace simply because you haven’t given yourself any deadlines.

So, no, you’re not a bad writer. You just need a content calendar to stay organized throughout 2024.

You can look at what you want your content to accomplish throughout the entire year, but you don’t have to put pressure on yourself to have all the details planned out. Split up your content plan by quarters. At first, you focus on January through March (quarter 1), then you move on to April through June (quarter 2), and so on.

If you feel like certain pieces of content are going to take longer to complete, then write down short-term due dates so that you know what you need to accomplish on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

When filling in your content calendar, keep in mind events, holidays, and launches that are relevant to your business.

A full content calendar informs the order in which you’ll write your posts. This prevents you from jumping around randomly from project to project.

how your content calendar helps your audience

You’re not the only one who benefits from using a content calendar. Your audience does, too.

The familiarity established through regularly scheduled blog posts allows the reader to eventually make a decision: “Should I invest my time, energy, and money into XYZ business or not?”

When a reader understands that you’re actively involved in their same thought processes and conversations, they’re more likely to become first-time and repeat customers. On the other hand, when you don’t keep yourself accountable with a content calendar, the relationship-building process can potentially slow down.

The upfront work of creating templates is like writing an instructional manual for yourself. Over time, sticking to your own rules and standards becomes a no-brainer. Templatized writing elevates your brand, as it supports consistent communication.

Consistency and repetition are good for everyone involved.

Get this: It takes the average mind 7 — some say 14 — times to memorize a single message, so don’t be afraid to repeat yourself or create some overlap within your content.

In addition to the templates included in 2024 Content Cafe, here are more smart ways to templatize your blog content writing process.

7 ways to use templates for writing blog posts

Choose your minimum requirements for keyword metrics like monthly search volume, keyword difficulty (competition), and click-through rate (CTR).

Conduct keyword research on a monthly or quarterly basis. Record your preferred keywords in a Notion table or Google Sheet.

Design blog post formats that match the search intent of your chosen keywords. Prioritize the listicle (“best”) and instructional (“how to”) formats.

Someone searching for a product rankings will click a post named “best xyz products.”

Someone searching for ideas or instructions will click a post named “how to “ or “easy steps to.”

Convert your chosen keywords into blog post titles, aligning with the listicle or instructional formats. Include numbers, scroll-stopping language, and concise formatting.

Organize your titles in a marketing calendar, alongside complementary social media posts. Keep in mind events, holidays, launches, etc.

Batch write the posts in date order, according to your marketing calendar. Plan to add internal links over time, as you publish more related blog posts.

Batch writing is dedicating a day or a few hours to writing, instead of switching between different types of tasks.

Analyze your website traffic and keyword data over time to identify ways to improve your blog content strategy. Incorporate outsourcing, as needed.

Brand Bank

Branding should 100% be completed before moving on to content creation. This brand bank is a representation of a creative process that’s already been completed. It’s a place for you to quickly copy and paste elements of your messaging that show up frequently in your content.

4 Elements of Your Brand Bank

emojis: emoticons that add imagery to your tone of voice

headlines: frequently used phrases containing 3-10 words each

statements: key points comprised of 1-2 sentences each

hashtags: improve searchability on social media platforms

The four elements above are not the main event; they’re meant to complement and energize your writing.

Staying on-brand within your written words includes what you say and how you say it (i.e. tone of voice). I’ll use some of my favorite small business owners as examples.

If I sold organic superfood desserts out of San Diego, I’m likely not going to research the keyword “Dallas brunch spots.” I’m also not going to write a blog post titled “How to Start a Cattle Farm.”

If I taught private drum lessons, I could write “5 Easy Steps to Assemble Your First Drum Kit,” instead of

“5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Play the Drums.”

If I owned a window repair business, I could research keywords like “home maintenance” and “energy efficient windows.” If I’m known for my approachable and funny tone of voice, I could use the blog post title

“3 Quick Ways to Clean Your Windows When You’d Rather be Watching Lord of the Rings,” instead of “How to Clean Your Windows.”

Each of the above blog posts or social media posts should come with their own emojis, headlines, statements, or hashtags (wherever it’s appropriate).

So before you hit publish, refer to your brand bank to ensure that you show up in front of your audience without confusing or repelling them.

SEO Tasks

The practice of search engine optimization (SEO) goes beyond creating Googleable content. There are many ways to improve your SEO outside of using keyword research tools to select important topics.

You might not have known that SEO requires frequent checkups on the back-end of your website. (I could have listed this as marketing mistake #1.)

Now you know you can give your website the best possible chance of being found by your ideal audience by managing on-page SEO, off-page SEO, and technical SEO.

Here are just a few examples to get you started:

SEO tasks to add to your marketing strategy

Remove or replace broken links.

Add your business address to your website footer.

Update your Google Business Profile.

Add alt descriptions to images throughout your website.

Add your business mission and a call to action (CTA) to your Instagram bio.

Contact blog owners for link building.

Install the Yoast SEO plugin onto your website.

Add internal links between related blog posts.

Place relevant keywords within your homepage copy.

Work with an SEO-friendly ghostwriter.

Check Google Analytics and Google Search Console frequently.

When you’re creating content on social media, do not post and ghost! Engage with your audience and other brands through social media, before and after publishing your content.

There’s no right way to do this, but let’s take a look at my approach.

I believe that one of the best ways to come up with blog post topics is to conduct research while you’re engaging with other accounts on social media. Let’s take Instagram for example.

Here’s how I gather blog post topic ideas while leaving a good impression on other Instagram accounts.

conducting blog post research through instagram comments

I create my graphic or video.

I write my caption. (Alternatively, my caption was pre-written during a batch writing session.)

I open Instagram on my laptop, since it’s easier to type on my computer than my phone.

I set a 15-minute timer, and I leave value-packed comments on as many relevant posts as possible.

If a comment is more than a few words or emojis, and it reflects my brand’s personality, then it’s value packed.

If a post is somehow related to my audience’s thoughts or questions, then it’s relevant.

Each time I leave a comment, I copy and paste it into my Google Doc called “Instagram Comments.”

Next to each comment I write myself a note, basically a summary of the message being shared in the post.

After the 15 minutes are up, I close Instagram and my Google Doc, knowing I’ve interacted with ~10 accounts. (Ten is the typical amount I’m able to complete in 15 minutes.) This means I have ~10 comments and ~10 ideas for new pieces of content, whether it’s for my blog, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.

As a result, my comments have been getting plenty of likes and responses. They’ve even been getting pinned by the original poster, so that my comment shows up at the very top of the comment section, right below the caption.

And a step further…it’s helping me get more follows.

The point of this process is to engage with your industry peers and ideal audience on an ongoing basis.

Instead of your business being an island of one, you’re learning what real people are having conversations about in real time. You’re building your business through social connection.

The content calendar page has multiple views, allowing you to filter the calendar by different types of content, as well as publishing status.

Use the content templates page to plan out social media video scripts and/or captions that relate to each blog post.

If a small business owner were to ask me, “How do I grow my audience?” I’d point them toward personal wellness, as well as technical skills.

For now, let’s look at the technical side, specifically, search engine optimization (SEO). Although there are other pieces to the puzzle, this post is all about on-page SEO.

On-page SEO encompasses the content that shows up on your website, as opposed to your behind-the-scenes SEO projects.

If I had to cut this blog post short, I would leave you with this: creating search engine optimized content means creating content that’s on-brand, Googleable, and reader-focused.

SEO content is on-brand, Googleable, and reader-focused.

You can take a big sigh of relief when you realize that your ideal audience has already created this content for you. You’re not pulling a problem out of thin air. Likewise, you’re not creating a solution out of thin air.

Your writing process is rooted in the public’s Google searches. This information is made available to you through keyword research tools, like Ahrefs and Moz.

On-Brand Blog Content

Staying on-brand includes what you say and how you say it (i.e. tone of voice). I’ll use some of my favorite small business owners as examples.

If I sold organic superfood desserts out of San Diego, I’m likely not going to research the keyword “Dallas brunch spots.” I’m also not going to write a blog post titled “How to Start a Cattle Farm.”

If I taught private drum lessons, I could write “5 Easy Steps to Assemble Your First Drum Kit,” instead of“5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Play the Drums.”

If I owned a window repair business, I could research keywords like “home maintenance” and “energy efficient windows.” If I’m known for my approachable and funny tone of voice, I could use the blog post title “3 Quick Ways to Clean Your Windows When You’d Rather be Watching Lord of the Rings,” instead of “How to Clean Your Windows.”

Going Off-Brand

Have you ever gone skydiving? What’s the difference between anti-gravity and zero-gravity?

Right now you’re probably wondering, “Is Kat glitching? I thought we were talking about blogging!” It’s kind of like sitting front row at an Andrea Bocelli concert, and all of a sudden you hear him singing “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus. It could be fascinating, but you’re also like, “How did we get here?!”

I’m taking this silly moment to remind you — you don’t have to be dull or bland. Hold onto what makes your brand stand out from the crowd. However, if you want the Google algorithm to favor your website, you must stay on topic.

Going off-brand will confuse and repel your ideal audience.

That’s why you conduct keyword research. You eliminate guesswork, while strategically choosing a variety of keywords that all point to common themes and goals within your niche.

Googleable Blog Content

First, what makes content un-Googleable?

Misalignment with search intent.

“The last time I walked my dog I fell” is a highly unlikely search term. Google would not understand which problem needs to be solved. Do you need knee doctor? Non slip shoes? A dog walker? The intention is unclear.

People don’t conduct Google searches that way, so you shouldn’t position your content that way. Instead, create blog post titles and headings that match search intent. “Top 5 Ways to Strengthen Your Knees Without a Gym” or “7 Best Dog Walking Services for Busy Dog Moms” could work for this example.

Yes, you should still include creativity, context, and stories. That’s more so for the body of the text. Your titles and headings (which organize different sections of your blog post) get to be simple, based on search intent. This eliminates the excuses of “I’m not a good writer” and “I’m just not creative.”

Googleable content is to the point and connects real people with real solutions. It’s the type of content that both Google robots and your human readers appreciate.

Reader-Focused Blog Content

Ultimately, SEO is a means to an end. Yes, I enjoy the process. I’m glad if you do, too. Yet, the true purpose behind SEO skill development is people. We strive to improve our internet visibility in order to serve our people well.

Find your sweet spot between SEO-focused writing and relationship-building writing. Both can be professional. Don’t underestimate your readers. They will notice any attempts to hack the Google algorithm by overusing keywords.

Yes, prioritize keyword research, but also make sure you’re tending to your audience’s communication style. You have permission to dump a couple SEO rules here and there, if it means truly getting through to your audience.

When it comes time to sit down and write your blog posts, preparation is key. Having a detailed system in place can save you minutes and hours behind your keyboard. Creating templates in the form of Google Docs, Canva infographics, and Notion tables is useful for your personal workflow.

This becomes even more valuable when it’s time to delegate your work to another team member. From researching keywords to outlining blog posts, the upfront organization saves everyone time and energy later.

The upfront work of creating templates is like writing an instructional manual for yourself. Over time, sticking to your own rules and standards becomes a no-brainer. Templatized writing elevates your brand, as it supports consistent communication.

You can templatize your keyword research process, using a table in Notion or Google Sheets. Some of the core keyword metrics you will record in your table are: monthly search volume, keyword difficulty (or competition), and organic click-through rate (CTR). You will access these metrics with a keyword research tool.

Each time you research a new keyword, you will determine whether or not it meets your minimum requirements.

For example, when I enter a niche-related keyword into Moz Pro, I’ll filter the results by search volume, so that only the keywords with at least 1,000 monthly searches appear in the results.

I can then save my preferred keywords in my table, to later convert them into blog post titles. This process eliminates keywords that don’t best support your on-page SEO.

Once you’ve chosen your desired number of keywords — and they align with your niche and brand — it’s time for titles.

Perhaps your monthly keyword research session yields five keywords. You’ll intend to rank on Google for all five, so you’ll create five working titles.

For example the keyword “digital content” becomes the working title “5 Digital Content Creation Hacks You Need in 2023.”

Remember — working titles are temporary titles used while blog posts are in progress. You can always change them later.

Blog post titles can be templatized with rules like: (1) the keyword must show up within the first 3 words, (2) the keyword is followed by 3-4 words, and (3) the year comes at the end.

Blog post titles must also align with search intent. Stay aligned by selecting blog post formats to use repeatedly. Two of the best formats for SEO-focused blogging are listicles and instructional blog posts.

Listicles (or “best posts”) are numbered lists used for ranking products and services. They help the reader find the best purchase within a sea of options. Someone searching for product rankings will click on a post that resembles “17 Best XYZ Products.”

Instructional blog posts (or “how to posts”) explain a process or skill. Technically, these can also be considered listicles, if the instructions are organized in numbered lists. Someone searching for instructions will click on a post that includes “how to” in the name, rather than one with “top” or “best.”

Ask Yourself. What does my chosen keyword tell me? Does my reader intend to learn, shop, or receive instructions?

Within your listicle and instructional formats create outlines that contain introductions, headings, subheadings, body text, conclusions, hyperlinks, images, and FAQs, as needed. Plan to add internal links over time, as you publish more related blog posts.

Organize your titles in a marketing calendar, which informs the order in which you’ll write the posts. Keep in mind events, holidays, and launches that are relevant to your business. Dedicate weekly hours to batch writing your blog posts, increasing your focus and speed. Analyze your website traffic and keyword data over time to identify ways to improve your blog content strategy.

If you run your business by yourself, then your golden, time-saving opportunity lies in outsourcing. Hire a ghostwriter who is familiar with your niche and upholds writing ethics.

As an individual blogger, common advice tells you that you have to wear all of these different hats: writer, digital marketer, web designer, web developer, SEO guru, outreach specialist, etc. But if you want to treat your blog like a business, you can’t do it all.
Adam Enfroy
