In a few weeks I’ll be thirty-one. That’s super young. But another year is never guaranteed. As an online business owner – and as a human – I’m ready to grow and exceed my original expectations.

Instead of waiting for the “right time,” each day I’m shifting my mindset in seven key ways. (Some are nerdier and more spiritual than others!)

Forceful Productivity → Restful Productivity

Audience Targeting → Keyword Targeting

Low Online Visibility → High Online Visibility

Last-Minute Panic Marketing → Sustainable Content Marketing

Guesswork → Intention

Victimhood → Leadership

Fast Track to Burnout → Proper Pacing

Let’s take a quick look at each of these seven mindset shifts for online business owners.

Forceful Productivity → Restful Productivity

Whether I’m creating a “me time” block in my Google Calendar or aligning my projects with my menstrual cycle, I get more done by continually tuning into the messages my body is sending me.

READ ABOUT RESTFUL PRODUCTIVITY

Audience Targeting → Keyword Targeting

By studying the questions, needs, and language of my ideal audience, I get to save money on ads while growing in my expertise and creating a more intimate connection with my clients.

READ ABOUT KEYWORD TARGETING

Low Online Visibility → High Online Visibility

I am only as hidden as I want to be. When it’s time to create more content on a wider variety of social platforms, I do so without the need for perfection.

READ ABOUT ONLINE VISIBILITY

Last-Minute Panic Marketing → Sustainable Content Marketing

Urgent action can be wise, but panic blurs my vision of the long-term goal. I reflect this in the way I manage my energy and plan my content ahead of time.

READ ABOUT SUSTAINABLE CONTENT MARKETING

Guesswork → Intention

“If I wake up 7 different days, maybe one day I’ll complete my project.” OR “For the next 7 days I’m going to dedicate 1 hour to finishing this project.” The latter is spoken by someone who’s resourceful and relentless.

READ ABOUT INTENTION

Victimhood → Leadership

Misfortune, pain, trauma…they’ve all been a part of my life. I can either own them or let them own me.

READ ABOUT LEADERSHIP

Fast Track to Burnout → Proper Pacing

Think about it – every athletic competition requires stretching, training, building, and sacrifice. And it also requires rest, recovery, reflection, and pacing.

READ ABOUT PACING

I haven’t learned any of this by myself. Grateful for those who have supported me throughout my life.
What about you? Which mindset shifts are you learning?

Believing you can get more done by prioritizing rest and personal fulfillment is a game changer. One of the main keys for unlocking this point of view is menstrual cycle syncing, or aligning your work with your body. Your menstrual cycle is more than just a physical change that annoys you every month. The mental and emotional shifts that seem to limit you during your period can instead support your entrepreneurial lifestyle and productivity goals.

Menstrual cycle syncing is about allowing your natural rhythm to support your personal and professional endeavors. The problem with not understanding your rhythm is you end up forcing yourself to follow a strict work schedule that goes against your body’s true nature.

As a result, your cycle becomes a stereotype of moodiness and uncontrollable emotions, instead of a place to gain insight and greater productivity.

The Stigma of Periods

Throughout society, it might be normal to dump negativity on women’s menstrual cycles. But around here, we don’t do that.

“Even today, the notion that a woman’s biology can befuddle her brain is a staple of popular culture. If a woman is moody, she’s asked if it’s ‘that time of the month’. If she’s feeling sexual, she’s told she might be ovulating.”
BBC.COM

Let’s make it clear: Your menstrual cycle is not a curse.

It’s a necessary part of your physiology. It’s up to you to use your reproductive system to your advantage, as you work on becoming more productive in business.

“The next time someone asks if you’re hormonal, you can say yes – but it isn’t necessarily a bad thing.”

BBC.COM

What Are the Four Phases of Your Menstrual Cycle?

Some consider your menstrual phase to be the first part of your cycle, while others say it’s the follicular phase. However you look at it, your menstrual cycle occurs in this sequence every 28-30 days:

Menstrual phase

Follicular phase

Ovulatory phase (ovulation)

Luteal phase

(Keep in mind that I’m skipping over exceptions like menopause, pregnancy, irregular cycles, hormonal defects, etc.)

Ready for a mini physiology lesson?

Menstrual Phase

If the egg that was released during ovulation did not become fertilized by a sperm, then the uterine lining sheds. This is why you bleed from your uterus each month.

Follicular Phase

Follicles grow on the surface of your ovaries, in preparation for another potential pregnancy (AKA fertilization by sperm).

Ovulatory Phase

Typically, only one egg is released from one follicle. The egg moves from the ovary through the fallopian tube and into the uterus. There the egg waits to be fertilized by a sperm.

Luteal Phase

Your uterine lining thickens in preparation for potential implantation, which results in pregnancy. If implantation does not occur, then the egg dies and will soon be released during the menstrual phase.

All of these changes are made possible through natural hormone fluctuations, which are affected by nutrition, stress levels, and daily lifestyle.

Now that we have a [super brief] overview of the menstrual cycle, let’s consider how you might try to sync up with it.

What Is the Goal of Menstrual Cycle Syncing?

Menstrual cycle syncing isn’t just another thing to keep track of in your busy life. The overall advantage of cycle syncing is it can make your life easier both personally and professionally, by leveraging your fluctuating strengths throughout the month.

There are multiple aspects to cycle syncing: eating, exercise, rest, and work.

In this post, we’re focusing only on the work aspect. I want you to walk away knowing how to creatively adjust your schedule to make the most of your energy throughout the four phases. I think you’ll have an easier time managing and completing your projects and tasks, even when life hits you with surprises.

Before we get into specific to-do lists, let’s look at the connection between brain function and the four menstrual phases.

How Do the Four Phases Impact Your Mental Energy?

Overall, there is still more scientific research to be done to determine a direct relationship between mental performance and the four menstrual cycle phases. But there is some evidence that points us in a general direction.

Okay. Ready for more physiology?

It is highly possible that your hippocampus (inside the brain) accounts for higher social energy during the follicular and ovulatory phases.

“Evidence is mounting that the hippocampus is vital to social abilities, since being able to remember your own experiences can help you to understand the motivations of others. The region gets bigger each month when more female hormones are floating around.”
BBC.COM

A second way your menstrual cycle affects the mind is through your brain’s left and right hemispheres.

Have you heard the idea that some people are left-brain thinkers, while others are right-brain thinkers? Well, it’s also likely that your ability to tap into both sides of your brain is strengthened during your follicular and luteal phases.

In this sense, your abilities to think both logically and creatively are less limited during your follicular and luteal phases than they are during your menstrual and ovulatory phases.

“A woman’s tendency to use both sides [of the brain] becomes more extreme when estrogen and progesterone levels increase each month.”

BBC.COM

Let’s Not Be Superstitious About Menstrual Cycle Syncing

With that said, the correlation between particular moments within the menstrual cycle and improved brain function is not 100% clear.

“It is unclear whether the negative experience of mood and psychological symptoms affects cognitive abilities, or whether it is an underlying hormonal dysregulation directly impacting cognition.”
Brain Sciences

Basically, this quote is asking:

Is it your elevated mood (and a lack of annoying periods) that helps you work faster and feel more social? Or is there a behind-the-scenes change that directly affects your brainpower?

These are interesting questions to explore.

I take this gray area into consideration when offering a new way for you to organize your tasks and projects. The intention behind sharing menstrual cycle syncing with you is not to restrict you and say you’ve gotta do things one way for the rest of your life.

Let’s face it: Menstrual cycle syncing requires more space in the world of scientific research.

But even without the guarantee of research, I think it’s important to honor your menstrual cycle and allow your body’s changes to play a role in your calendar.

Again – this isn’t superstition. Just because you choose not to sync with your menstrual cycle doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be less productive than those who practice cycle syncing.

Alrighty! We got the disclaimers out of the way.

Now, let’s look at this 4-part system that will help you create content, network, and build your brand, in alignment with your cycle.

How Do I Use Menstrual Cycle Syncing for My Business?

With all of the above monthly changes in mind, let’s look at how to align your work with your natural rhythm:

Menstrual Phase

Now’s the time to go inward and reflect. Give yourself extra grace and flexibility as you bleed. Honor the fact that you may require extra rest for several days.

During your menstrual phase, you can:

Conduct a monthly review

Practice vision mapping

Make intuitive decisions

Repost old content

Read a book about your industry

Conduct a SWOT analysis for the upcoming month

Take a social media break

Research upcoming networking events

Follicular Phase

Your body is gearing up for higher-energy days and creative work sessions. Now’s the time to lean into batched processes and repeatable tasks, rather than jumping between various types of work.

During your follicular phase, you can:

Batch your copywriting

Batch your video filming

Batch your client calls

Batch your podcast recording

Schedule upcoming content

Hold coffee shop meetings

Design social media graphics

Plan a social media live stream

Ovulatory Phase

At this point, you may feel more motivated to put yourself out there, whether it’s in person or on the internet. As opposed to your menstrual phase, take this time to leave it all on the court…stop hiding…do the darn thing!

During your ovulatory phase, you can:

Facilitate team meetings

Conduct sales calls

Conduct team hiring

Enjoy a photoshoot

Complete a social media live stream

Post bold and daring social media captions

Attend a networking event

Hold a business strategy session

Luteal Phase

Ready to start going inward again? This is when your body requires energy to either prepare for pregnancy or release an egg that dies during menstruation. Get your logical tasks in order, and don’t be surprised if you come off as more critical than ever.

During your luteal phase, you can:

Create monthly reports

Edit your photos and videos

Record your website analytics

Complete accounting tasks

Organize your workspace

Organize your digital files

Conduct keyword research

Get your email inbox to zero

Wrap-Up: Increasing Productivity With Menstrual Cycle Syncing

It’s time to honor our menstrual cycles as more than just a pain in the rear that comes around every 30 days. If you give it a chance, perhaps you’ll witness yourself becoming more productive and energetically in tune as you start experimenting with menstrual cycle syncing.

But wait! Beyond just talking about it…how do you tangibly begin cycle syncing? It all starts with tracking your cycle. This means writing down how long each of your phases lasts in your calendar. (Not how long they “should” last, but literally how long they last in your body.)

Next, use a planner or journal to fill in your business projects and tasks in alignment with your phases. This way, you’re not wondering what kind of work to assign yourself within a given week or month.

Before we end this, I’d love to share my menstrual cycle syncing planner with you! This downloadable PDF helps you navigate each of the four phases of your menstrual cycle as a busy entrepreneur.

No more randomly scheduling your meetings, projects, and tasks. Instead, align your business with your varying levels of productivity, social energy, and rest within a given month.

As you’re designing your brand, creating content, and improving your marketing strategy, you may find it difficult to tap into your creativity without the help of caffeine. You notice that your most productive work sessions are done after you’ve had your cup(s) of coffee.

Is this connection between creativity and coffee a myth? Is drinking coffee every time you need to get work done a sustainable way to approach your business (and overall lifestyle)?

If you don’t see yourself as an artist, or you’ve noticed you’re more of an analytical or systems-oriented person, then good on you for having that self-awareness. Still, I think at a certain point it’s good to admit that each and every one of us is creative. We all have an innate ability to make something out of nothing and develop outside-of-the-box solutions in a way that’s never been done before.

In this way, you are a pattern interrupter. You’re blazing your own trail. Maybe you’re thinking, “I don’t want to be a trailblazer. Life is so much easier when I get to follow someone else’s instructions.” I can relate to those feelings.

But I want to dispel the idea that creativity is difficult to access daily. Yes, everyone can act creatively without caffeine in their systems. That’s my opinion, at least.

With that said, caffeine has an undeniable effect on the nervous system, which controls our thoughts, movements, and ability to produce work.

The question is: Scientifically, how necessary is caffeine for you to show up as the best business owner you can be? Let’s consider this question from the perspective of scheduling creative work sessions into your business calendar.

What Is Needed For Productive Creative Sessions?

Whether you’re designing an email newsletter or batch-writing social media posts for the week ahead, your behind-the-scenes marketing activities require you to focus on your work without jumping to other distractions.

You need the ability to stick with the original plan, as well as solve problems as they arise. You also benefit from having attention to detail and a vision of the bigger picture, at the same time.

Investing the creative energy it takes to run a business requires a willingness to say “yes” to ideas that pop up in your mind, without overly referencing or relying on others’ work or ideas.

All of these attributes combined describe the ability to focus and solve problems.

How Does Caffeine Help You Focus and Solve Problems?

Scientifically speaking, there’s a lot that goes into the way coffee, black tea, matcha, and other caffeinated beverages affect the human mind. Shall we get a little nerdy? Okay, let’s do it!

Better Health Channel tells us that “caffeine is a stimulant, which means it increases activity in your brain and nervous system. It also increases the circulation of chemicals such as cortisol and adrenaline in the body. In small doses, caffeine can make you feel refreshed and focused.”

So does it actually help creativity? There seems to be mixed feedback.

“While the cognitive benefits of caffeine – increased alertness, improved vigilance, enhanced focus, and improved motor performance – are well established […] the stimulant’s effect on creativity is less known,” says a study published by the University of Arkansas.

An article from Inc.com uses coffee as the prime example of a high-caffeine drink:

“Coffee is enormously helpful to the creative process because it suppresses unwanted and unnecessary insights and instead helps you focus on the work at hand. It helps you get down to work, stay on the project, and make day-to-day progress, rather than daydreaming up new things that you might be doing instead.”

As we read about these effects, we have to remember that, just like with anything, each individual reacts a bit differently to caffeine.

What Is Detrimental About Relying on Caffeine?

Relying on caffeine to be productive in your business might be summarized as a placebo effect. In other words, creating the daily habit of drinking coffee before working can create a psychological reliance or superstition that “I can’t accomplish XYZ until I’ve had my coffee.”

Caffeine is known to make your adrenals work overtime. This can lead to a phenomenon known as adrenal fatigue, which can feel like lightheadedness, nervousness, and excessive tiredness even after getting a full night’s sleep.

Caffeine acts as a diuretic, so it depletes the gut of nutrients, electrolytes, and water, which are necessary for proper brain function.

These are good enough reasons to either stop drinking caffeine (if it’s affecting your well-being) or cut back significantly.

How Can You Produce High-Quality Creative Work Without Caffeine?

Believe it or not, you’ve got a lot of power to produce creative work without caffeine. You may have to change the lens through which you see coffee (or other caffeinated products), as well as the way you see your mind.

Here are a few quick perspective shifts:

As a human, you are naturally curious. Whether out loud or quietly, you pose questions, and then you answer them. This sort of problem-solving happens more intuitively than you might realize.

Your brain can only pay attention to so many things at once. By working through any conditions in any random environment, you may be overloading your brain more than you think.

As a society, we’ve been taught to work the same way as “everyone” (i.e. Monday through Friday, from 9 AM – 5 PM). By following this trend, you may be ignoring your body’s natural rhythms. Over time, you’ll find that forcing yourself to push past your natural limitations is unsustainable both personally and professionally.

What Are the Sustainable Ways to Access Your Creative Side?

I’d say you need a combination of focus and mind-wandering – or accessing your imagination. This combination can be reached through:

Mindfulness

Practicing moments of slowness and stillness, even apart from work sessions or moments of problem-solving

Environment

Setting up the right work environment (e.g. sights, sounds, smells, and room temperature)

Boundaries

Creating and reinforcing boundaries around your time and energy (e.g. turn on email away messages, turn off notifications, take breaks using the Pomodoro Method)

Cyclical Living

Maximizing your energy by managing projects and tasks in alignment with your natural cycles (i.e. sleep cycle)

For example, neuroscientist Andrew Huberman promotes fixing your relationship with sleep and cortisol, which occur naturally, but can also be manipulated by:

Early wakeups (around sunrise)

Sunlight exposure

Caffeine in healthy amounts

Physical activity (particularly intense exercise)

Early bedtimes

Ultimately, you will find the path that’s most sustainable for you after analyzing your deepest desires or non-negotiables.

Wrap-Up: Is Caffeine Necessary?

Caffeine can definitely have a positive impact on your creativity, but it isn’t absolutely necessary to complete your creative work. As an entrepreneur, it’s up to you to decide which routines you’re going to adopt, in order to creatively build a long-lasting business without burning yourself out.

A great place to start establishing a healthy way of accessing your creativity is collaboration. Working with and talking to like-minded people who fill various gaps in my skill sets has been highly beneficial for me as an entrepreneur. Collaborating with others naturally accelerates your growth – as long as you’re open to learning, of course.

This brings me to a beautiful opportunity I have for you.

Any unconventional, entrepreneurial thinkers like me out there?

Learn this one rule, and you’ll be set for a long, enjoyable business journey:

Personal wellness and business success run parallel.

In both spheres, make a habit of nourishing yourself (and your team) first, expanding your capacity to serve others and leverage unexpected challenges.

Use the inevitable twists and turns in life to better understand your personal and professional non-negotiables. You’ll find that building relationships, setting boundaries, and sticking to timelines become easier this way.

Tap into the abundance of wellness and business tools available to you, while trusting that financial legacy and personal legacy are both worthy investments.

Some of the most powerful tools you can start accessing today are: sunlight, sleep, breath, emotional release, and clean water.

Beyond these natural resources, keep your eyes, ears, and mind open to the support around you. Practice saying “yes” to the gifts and opportunities your friends or business peers offer you, especially if they help you lighten your mental load and re-center your energy.

Maintain forward momentum by balancing your sense of self…

Want another quick tidbit? Be careful not to sabotage your productivity and profitability by falling into these similar, yet, opposite traps:

Undervaluing and overvaluing your work.

Undervaluing your ideas and projects will challenge your willingness to begin something you’re still preparing for or fine-tuning. Ironically, simply starting is the only way to progress past the novice zone.

Overvaluing also reinforces unrealistic, perfectionist standards. Your mind may predict exaggerated feedback from your peers or the public. A decently important matter dramatically shifts into a high-stakes situation — in your head. While certain trolls will have harsh things to say, people typically pay less critical attention to your work than you might imagine.

Both tendencies will limit your presence and participation in the activities your heart and soul are nudging you to do. Keep them in check, and you’ll grow in the areas of timely decision-making and healthy self-criticism.

Remain authentic, honor your imperfect creative processes, and surround yourself with those who are excited about your success.

You… we are worthy of taking up space.
